Welcome

Janie Harris founded our school in Beckenham back in 1980, and successfully built its reputation in the local area and beyond as one that offers its students the very best standards of dance teaching whilst promoting a sense of joy and love of dance within the classes.  Elizabeth Whitmore took over in 2011 and continues the nurturing dance ethos for all.

“ The most amazing and brilliant ballet school. The teachers are professional, caring and they definitely bring out the best in each and every one of the dancers. So pleased we discovered this school all those years ago! ”

Gloria, mother of Abriana

Since taking over the school, Elizabeth has aspired to carry on the values that Janie embedded with the school’s foundations, namely a passion for dance, a safe environment within which to learn, and the highest teaching standards whilst ensuring fun and inclusion for all. Yet we are so much more than just a place to learn to dance. We are a community as well, where our students and their families feel a sense of belonging. It is a place to meet like-minded people, share and express an enthusiasm for dance

We strive to broaden our students’ dance horizons and develop their interests through workshops, charity fundraising, competitions, invited artists and visits to the Royal Opera House to name a few. Some of our students have been selected to train at The Royal Ballet School as weekend Associates and full time at White Lodge. We have also had students successfully audition for a wide range of vocational and higher education dance training. These establishments include Arts Ed, Brit School, Chichester University, English National Ballet School, Italia Conti School, Laine Theatre Arts, Trinity Laban, University of Roehampton and Urdang Academy.

Students have danced with the Royal Ballet Company in The Winter’s Tale, Don Quixote and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet. Others have been fortunate enough to perform in West End shows including Billy Elliott, Matilda, The Lion King and The Snowman. Yet others have successfully auditioned for the English Youth Ballet, London Children’s Ballet, and the English National Ballet Youth Company. In 2016 we were proud to be one of the select dance schools to be invited to take part in the Queen’s ninetieth birthday celebrations in London.

From small children to our more mature students, it is the love of dance that joins us all in one common purpose and keeps the soul of the Janie Harris School of Dance vibrant and dynamic.
