Ballet is one of the most demanding but also one of the most enjoyable dance forms ever created, providing benefits such as good posture, discipline and confidence building. We run Royal Academy of Dance Graded and Vocational classes encouraging the joy of movement in children from 3 years of age at our studio in Beckenham, Kent. We offer annual outings to the Royal Opera House, hold workshops and other dance related events.

Summer Term 2021 Starts April 19th 2021

We are pleased to announce that we will be returning to in person classes at our studios in Beckenham in the summer term. Details will be emailed to all our members during the Easter break. Congratulations to our dancers who have managed to continue dancing online from November onwards. You have all managed brilliantly.

Pre- School, Pre Primary & Primary Ballet

Our ballet classes start from 3 years of age for pre school and reception level children (pre primary) on Mondays at 4.00pm  Those in year one move on to Primary ballet Tuesday 4.05pm. Each level builds upon the last, although a child can start at any point. The classes are an excellent introduction into the structure of ballet lessons, lots of images and themes are involved, designed so that they are performing ballet exercises in a manner that is fun and stimulating. These are informal, imaginative ballet classes which grow in complexity as a child progresses. Before starting at our ballet school children are invited to attend a trial lesson at the appropriate level. We do not enter very young children into examinations as we prefer to provide flexible non syllabus ballet classes which are regularly adapted to suit a child's progress and maintain interest. Please contact us with your child's name, year group and we will place your child on the waiting list.

Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Classes

When children enter grade 1 (generally around year two) they begin to follow the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance. Our teachers are registered and highly qualifued ballet teachers (LRAD) and  experienced dancers (ARAD). They are graduates of The College of the Royal Academy of Dance in London and hold a degree in dance. Students at the school are invited to take their RAD grade 1 examination when ready and continue at the school taking grade examinations through to grade 8 and are invited to join the RAD vocational syllabus when appropriate. The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) was founded in 1920 to maintain the quality of dance teaching. Its Patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the President is Darcey Bussell. It is one of the worldwide leading organisations in dance education and training. Exams are conducted in our studio in Beckenham accompanied by a pianist.

Adult Ballet Classes 8-9pm Monday &  7.45-8.45pm Tuesday

We conduct two adult ballet classes held at 8-9pm on Mondays & 7.45-8.45 Tuesdays. Our Monday class is for beginners or those returning to ballet classes after a break. The Tuesday class generally for those who have done a fair amount of ballet in the past. Ballet is a great way to get toned, improve posture, coordination and connect with the inner dancer! If you are new to ballet or if you danced as a child or student and are keen to dust of your ballet shoes again do come and join our enthusiastic, energetic classes in Beckenham. You will be most welcome to either class, if you want to get fit, start a new hobby, or rediscover the wonderful world of ballet.

Ballet 1 to 1

We offer private coaching for our students on a  1 to 1 basis. This is an excellent  way for dancers to improve their technique, performance and confidence. 1 to 1's can be booked as an individual class or as a series. These vary from 30 minutes to an hour and can cover specific areas of ballet technique for example beginners pointe work or extra coaching for a forthcoming RAD ballet exam. All 1 to 1 lessons have written feedback after each class from the teacher. 1 to 1 lessons continue through school holidays by appoinment.

Contemporary & Ballet Strengthening Technique

In addition to ballet classes we have contemporary dance classes on Mondays from 5.00-5.45pm. These energetic classes are for dancers at grade 3 level and above. Many of our students go on to study dance in secondary school where an understanding of contemporary dance is most beneficial. Some of our graduating students have also gone on to study contemporary at university. We also have ballet strengthening technique classes, currently online. These classes start with pupils from grade 3 level and involve exercises to improve core strength and flexibility using pilates balls and Therabands. If you would like to try either of these classes do get in touch.

Theatre Trips

We regularly organise trips to the theatre and encourage as many as possble to come along. Our outings regularly see around 70 dancers, friends and family enjoying a night at the theatre. In January 2020 we went to the Royal Opera House to see Coppélia. In 2017-2019 students, adults and friends of the school were invited to the Royal Opera House to watch the MacMillan triple bill, the new production of Swan Lake and  Romeo & Juliet.

In addition to our regular classes we also hold workshops for students. In February 2019 we hosted a Cats The Musical workshop for 19 students conducted by professional dancer Daisy Hulbert. This inspiring workshop turning our lovely dancers into cats and gave them all an excellent insight into this well known show. Former workshops include Swan Lake conducted by Monica Tapiador in February 2018. In the May half term 2017 we held a Coppelia Masterclass with Brenda Last OBE. Brenda Last performed with the Royal Ballet and went on to become Artistic Director of the Norwegian National Ballet. She was awarded an OBE for services to dance in 2012.

Alice at The Barn Theatre, Oxted.

At the end of the autumn term 2018 we performed at The Barn Theatre Oxted in a new production of Alice in Wonderland. It was wonderful to see the theatre sold out in every performance. The ballet had three casts and involved dancers from Primary level and above. We raised £2,110 for Clicsargent. Well done to all our wonderful dancers and back stage crew. It was a memorable event that we will all treasure. Thank you to Zibi Kedziora at zibistudios.com for the photographs and Wizard Video productions for the filmimg. The photographs and dvd's will keep the memories alive for all involved!
